What drying out a house costs
Published national guides put a typical job between about $1,200 and $5,700.1,2,3 The water category moves the price most: roughly $3 to $4 a square foot for clean water and $7 to $7.50 for grossly contaminated.3

Accent mark = the guide's stated average. They include different work, which is why they disagree.
Some ranges cover only drying and cleanup; others add drywall, ceiling or flooring. Ask what a quote includes and what water category it assumes.3,1

Before you sign anything
Check whoever shows up
- Their Idaho contractor registration number. Idaho requires registration for most construction work over $2,000, and registered contractors must show the number on advertising, contracts and permits.4 Look it up with the Idaho Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses.
- Which registration covers the work they propose. The state's FAQ does not say whether water mitigation alone falls under registration, so ask them and confirm with the Division.4
- What water category they assigned, and what they found that led to it.5
- A written, line-item estimate before work begins.6
- That permanent repairs wait until your insurer has inspected.7
